Intelligent energy management optimises the interplay of the combustion engine and electric motor. The electric boost function provides a noticeable increase in dynamic vigour - expressed most prominently by the powertrain's instantaneous responses - and combines with enhanced efficiency courtesy of the electric assist function and the opportunity to drive through town and cross-country on electric power only to create a unique symbiosis of driving pleasure and sustainability. The best of two worlds: BMW eDrive and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology
The combustion engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology employed by the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 7-Series is a member of the new Efficient Dynamics engine family. Developing maximum output of 190 kW/258 hp, it is the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever fitted in a series-produced BMW. Instantaneous power delivery and peak torque of 400 Newton metres (295 lb-ft) - on tap across a wide rev range (1,550 - 4,400 rpm) - imbue the 2.0-litre unit with vivaciously sporty yet also poised and authoritative performance. In addition, the new engine displays outstanding refinement.
The electric drive system, based on the principle of a permanently excited synchronous motor, boasts exceptionally high power density with a maximum output of 83 kW/113 hp. As is characteristic for electric drive systems, it serves up its peak torque of 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) from the word go. The boost effect for the combustion engine provides the driver with thrillingly instantaneous responses. Furthermore, the electric motor takes on the role of a generator which - depending on the hybrid function selected - is powered either by recuperating braking energy or by efficiently raising the engine's load points. It then feeds the energy it generates into the high-voltage battery.
The electric motor is fully integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. This ensures that pure-electric driving, the dynamics-enhancing electric boost function and the recuperation of braking energy are all extremely efficient. The eight-speed Steptronic transmission has outstanding internal efficiency, top-class shift dynamics and shift comfort, and a compact construction. Gearshift paddles on the steering wheel are available as an option, enabling the driver to make manual gear selections with exceptional swiftness and the greatest of ease.
Working together intelligently, the combustion engine and electric drive system bring a system output of 240 kW/326 hp and a combined peak torque of 500 Newton metres (369 lb-ft) to the table. Immediate response to every movement of the accelerator and sustained delivery of dynamic power allow the BMW 740e iPerformance to dash from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds and the BMW 740Le iPerformance to complete the same sprint in 5.5 seconds.

BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance: permanent all-wheel drive also applies to all-electric driving
The BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance follows in the tyre tracks of the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance Sports Activity Vehicle as the brand's second model to distribute its power permanently to all four wheels in pure-electric driving, when the combustion engine cuts in and when both drive systems are in use at the same time. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures supreme traction, optimised directional stability and enhanced agility through enthusiastically taken corners in all weather and road conditions.
Perfectly executed power distribution between the front and rear wheels gives the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance extremely dynamic accelerative ability, with the journey from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) completed in 5.3 seconds. Yet the petrol consumption of the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance is just 2.5 - 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres (113 - 134.5 mpg imp) combined, while the associated CO2 emissions are 56 - 49 grams per kilometre (figures as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles, may vary depending on the tyre format specified). The combined electric power consumption of the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance in the EU test cycle comes in at between 13.9 and 13.2 kWh per 100 kilometres (figures may vary depending on the tyre format specified).
eDrive button allows powertrain control to be configured as desired
The driver can use the eDrive button on the centre console to change how the plug-in hybrid drive system operates. In the AUTO eDRIVE hybrid function, intelligent energy management ensures the combustion engine and electric motor work together with maximum efficiency and to dynamically optimised effect. The operating strategy defaults to all-electric mode at low and moderate speeds to utilise the advantages of locally emission-free mobility as widely as possible. The combustion engine only joins the fray at a speed of around 80 km/h (50 mph) or under heavy throttle applications.
The driver can switch to the MAX eDRIVE pure-electric mode at the touch of a button. In this setting the car is powered exclusively by the electric motor, although the combustion engine can be brought into play at any time by pushing the accelerator into kickdown. In the MAX eDRIVE setting, the BMW iPerformance variants of the new BMW 7-Series have a pure-electric top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph).
The Battery Control setting allows the charge of the high-voltage battery to be set manually. The driver can input a target value between 30 and 100 per cent of maximum charge, which is then available for pure-electric driving later in the journey. For example, electric power can be held back or even increased while on the motorway so it can be used subsequently for locally emission-free driving in town.
Driving Experience Control switch with ADAPTIVE mode, clearly noticeable differentiation between SPORT, COMFORT and ECO PRO mode
The plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 7-Series are also equipped as standard with the newly designed Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console. At the touch of a button, the driver can activate a vehicle setting that optimises dynamics, comfort or efficiency. The range of characters encompassed by ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT modes are even more clearly defined than with conventionally powered vehicles.
Beyond this, the Driving Experience Control switch offers the option of selecting ADAPTIVE mode. In this setting, the car's responses adapt noticeably to the driver's style and route profile.
High-voltage lithium-ion battery: developed specifically for the models at hand, integrated with space-saving skill
The high-voltage lithium-ion battery has a gross capacity of 9.2 kWh and net capacity of 7.4 kWh. It is accommodated underneath the rear seat bench in a space-saving position that also provides optimum crash safety. The BMW iPerformance variants of the new BMW 7-Series therefore also benefit from a level surface in the luggage compartment, which offers a capacity of 420 litres. The stowage volume and practicality of the load area set the benchmark in the luxury plug-in hybrid sedan segment.
The energy flow between the high-voltage battery, electric motor and charger is controlled by power electronics likewise developed specifically for these models. The power electronics also regulate the supply of energy from the high-voltage battery to the 12V onboard electrical system via a voltage transformer.
Simple, hassle-free and flexible charging thanks to innovative products and services von BMW 360° ELECTRIC
The high-voltage battery can be topped up with energy from any domestic power socket, a Wallbox designed for higher currents or public charging stations. The battery can be fully charged in under four hours from a domestic power socket and in under three hours from a BMW i Wallbox. Added to which, BMW 360° ELECTRIC includes the ChargeNow service, which grants straightforward access to partner charging stations and can also be used for the convenient billing of monthly energy costs.
Standard specification includes auxiliary air conditioning
The high level of standard specification for the BMW 740e iPerformance, BMW 740Le iPerformance and BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance includes LED headlights, the BMW Display Key, the ConnectedDrive navigation package, smartphone integration with inductive charging facility for the phone battery, and an iDrive operating system expanded to include a touchscreen function for the Control Display and the globally unique BMW gesture control feature. Customers can also look forward to auxiliary heating and air conditioning, which allow them to prepare the car's interior temperature in advance. The heating and air conditioning system of the plug-in hybrid models is supplied with energy from the high-voltage battery. When the car's battery is being charged, the auxiliary air conditioning function is powered by the mains supply.

The next chapter of Nissan's "Year of the Truck" was unveiled with a sneak peek of the latest members of the Nissan Titan full-size pickup family - the 2017 Titan XD and Nissan Titan Single Cab models. The first-ever single cab offering in Titan history, the new trucks are designed to provide an affordable and rugged entry-point in the commercial fleet/work truck market. The Single Cab is the second of three eventual Titan body configurations, joining the current Crew Cab and future King Cab. The Single Cab models are scheduled to go on sale in late fall 2016.
"Once we complete the roll-out of all Titan cab, bed, powertrain and grade level configurations, our all-new Titan family will cover about 85 percent of the total light pickup marketplace," said Rich Miller, director of Product Planning for Trucks, SUVs and Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. and chief product specialist for Titan and Titan XD. "More importantly, the Titan XD and Titan single cabs will have the power, torque, heavy duty chassis and durability demanded by today's demanding worksites - including the highest towing capacities and payloads in the lineup."
Titan will ultimately be available in a total of three cabs, three bed lengths, three engines, 4x4 and 4x2 drive and S, SV, SL, PRO-4X and Platinum Reserve trim levels. The new single cab will be offered in both Titan XD and Titan configurations, with both versions sharing the same cab dimensions and 8.0-foot pickup beds but completely separate fully boxed ladder frame chassis.
The Nissan Titan XD Single Cab, like the Titan XD Crew Cab, will be offered in a choice of two engines - the Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, which is rated at 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque; and the 5.6-liter Endurance V8, rated at 390 horsepower and 394 lb-ft of torque. The Titan Single Cab, with about a foot shorter wheelbase, will be offered initially with the new 5.6-liter Endurance V8 (a V6 engine will be available at a later date). Diesel equipped models feature an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission and V8 gasoline engine equipped versions will utilize a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Along with a choice of 4x4 and 4x2 drive configurations, two grade levels will be available with both Titan XD and Titan Single Cabs - S and SV, along with a number of optional equipment packages.
"The new Single Cab takes Titan into new territory, bringing the innovative design and bed utility that Titan has been known for to a wider base of commercial use buyers," added Miller.
The new Single Cab models will be assembled in Canton, Mississippi with the 5.6-liter V8 gasoline engine assembled in Decherd, Tennessee. The 5.0-liter diesel engines are assembled by Cummins, Inc. in Columbus, Indiana.

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible retains the elegant design proportions of the five-door and coupe derivatives with its acoustically-lined fabric roof open or closed. Interior volume and luggage capacity have been maximized for cargo versatility regardless of the roof's position.

Land Rover designers have retained the bold and progressive exterior design of the Range Rover Evoque with the convertible roof system open or closed. A sophisticated fabric roof with tension-bow architecture creates a defined silhouette that remains faithful to the original design of the vehicle, while the Z-fold mechanism folds flush with the rear bodywork for a sleek, uncluttered appearance. New frameless doors have also been developed to ensure a clean profile when the roof is stowed.
Emphasizing its position within the Range Rover Evoque model line-up,
the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is available in SE Dynamic or HSE
Dynamic specifications. In both cases, the convertible features a
special set of exterior enhancements including a deeper, more aggressive
front bumper with enlarged air intakes. The HSE Dynamic derivative also
features slimline LED fog lights, body-colored side skirts to visually
lower the vehicle and a dynamic rear bumper that houses distinctive twin
exhaust outlets.
A dynamic front grille with enlarged geometric
mesh area, vent surrounds and a selection of six alloy wheel designs and
finishes, ranging from 18- to 20-inches adds further design
differentiation between convertible and fixed-roof models. Unique for
the 20-inch alloy wheels are two premium finishes; Polished and Satin
Black.
SE Dynamic specification includes exterior trim details

carefully redesigned to seamlessly integrate with packaging requirements
of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, while an all-new tailgate and
spoiler have been engineered to compliment the new design; the rear
spoiler houses the LED stoplight and optimizes aerodynamics, while the
innovative tailgate hinge mechanism allows for a larger aperture,
providing exceptional versatility.
The Range Rover Evoque
Convertible is available in 13 exterior colors, including new Baltoro
Ice and Waitomo Grey metallic. Creating a distinctive horizon line to
complement the Ebony Black fabric roof, the door mirrors and the upper
section of the rear spoiler are finished in Narvik Black as standard.
Personalization
Allowing
customers to add their own stamp of individuality, the Range Rover
Evoque Convertible is available with a range of accessories including
illuminated personalized (with a script of the owner's choice) or Union

Adaptive LED Headlights
The
Range Rover Evoque Convertible is available with a choice of standard
equipment Halogen (SE Dynamic), Xenon headlamps (HSE Dynamic), or
optional full-LED adaptive headlamps.
The LED headlamps feature a
new, highly-distinctive design for both headlamp and indicator
functions. LED technology is designed to offer increased visibility,
enhanced longevity, and reduces demands on the battery, while the
adaptive functionality enables the headlamps to automatically follow the
driver's steering inputs, increasing light coverage through corners.
Whether
optioned with Halogen, Xenon or LED headlamps, the Range Rover Evoque
Convertible is equipped with LED tail lamps and LED daytime-running
lights (DRLs) as standard. For additional visual impact, both front and
rear DRLs are automatically illuminated when the ignition is activated.
Convertible Roof
Land
Rover designers carefully evaluated various possible convertible roof
systems before opting for a sophisticated Z-fold fabric roof from
Webasto.
This system features tension-bow architecture
complementing the vehicle's defined proportions and a flush fitting
heated rear window glass supporting the acoustic insulation of the
vehicle that maximizes refinement. The roof system on the Range Rover
Evoque Convertible lowers in just 18 seconds and rises in 21 seconds
when the roof button on the center console is pressed. It also allows
all four windows to be simultaneously raised or lowered for maximum
convenience.
In addition, a rear wind deflector can be quickly
installed between the rear three quarter trim panels, enhancing
refinement when the roof is stowed.
Advantages of the fabric roof
design when compared with folding hardtop solutions include reduced
weight, improved center of gravity and the ability to raise or lower the
roof at higher speeds. The 8.9-cu. ft. (251-liter) luggage capacity of
the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is retained, whether the roof is open
or closed.
Available exclusively in Ebony Black, the luxurious
fabric roof echoes the distinctive design of optional contrast roof
equipped on the Range Rover Evoque Coupe.
Once the roof is
lowered, discreet hinged panels located at the rear of the interior fold
flush to conceal the mechanism, ensuring the vehicle's contemporary
lines are retained for a clean and uncluttered appearance.
A
Roll-over Protection Device (RPD) features a deployable roll-over
protection system hidden in the rear quarter panel. The RPD is designed
to automatically deploy two aluminum bars in 90 milliseconds in the
unlikely event of a roll-over situation, to create a potential
protection space for occupants.
Four-seat Interior
The
Range Rover Evoque Convertible features a spacious and contemporary

capacitive touch-screen with a 21:9 super-wide format and 1280x542 pixel
resolution. This equates to an 80% size increase over the standard
eight-inch touchscreen system, providing graphics with unrivalled
definition and smoothness. Solid State Disk (SSD) technology provides
significantly faster response times than SD-card or HDD-based systems.
With
no 'hard' buttons on this system, the homescreen presents the four most
commonly required infotainment functions in one easily accessible

These can also be accessed via steering wheel-mounted controls, while
capacitive technology gives users the ability to navigate sub-menus and
access functions using swipe, pan, and pinch-to-zoom controls, just as
they would on a smartphone or tablet.
These functions include the
parking cameras, Eco Data, rear-seat climate-control settings and
optional InControl Wi-Fi™ hotspot. Steps between functions are reduced
for enhanced convenience, and the interface is optimized for a more
intuitive user experience.

Drivers
looking for additional functionality out of their navigation can add
Connected Navigation functionality to their navigation system. When
specified, Connected Navigation enables door-to-door route planning and
guidance, including public transportation options. A companion app
allows drivers to plan their route offline and load it into the system
at the start of the journey. Once the driver exits the car and the phone
is disconnected from the vehicle, the app will continue to provide
navigational directions, if need be, on the driver's phone.
Connected
Navigation also features Commute Mode, which learns the driver's daily
commute to and from the home or office and can automatically offer
alternative routes to avoid congestion using historical and real-time
traffic information, and Approach Mode which displays a 360-degree
interactive view of the driver's surroundings on the infotainment screen
as they get to within 656ft (200m) of their destination, and can even
direct the driver to the nearest available parking space.
Vehicle's
specified with Connected Navigation feature InControl Wi-Fi™ as
standard enabling the vehicle to support up to eight devices via a 3G
hotspot for fast, reliable internet access on the move.
Land Rover InControl® Technological Suite
Aligned
with the rest of the Range Rover Evoque line-up, the Range Rover Evoque
Convertible features various InControl technologies as standard or
optional equipment.
InControl Remote™ enables owners to remotely
start the engine and bring the cabin to a pre-set temperature, verify
the vehicle's status and lock or unlock the doors. The app can also send
a smartphone alert if the vehicle alarm is sounding, providing the
option to reset if required and can help locate the vehicle in a busy
parking lot by flashing the vehicle's headlights and sounding discreet
alarm noises. Extending the functionality of this feature, the InControl
Remote app is now available on the Apple Watch.
InControl
Protect™ allows owners to contact roadside assistance or emergency
services; an SOS signal is automatically triggered in the event of
airbag deployment.
First introduced for the 2016 model year as a
standard feature, Land Rover InControl Remote & Protect remain
standard for 2017.
When equipped, InControl Apps™ syncs Apple® or
Android™ smartphones to the vehicle through a USB interface, providing
access to apps optimized for in-car use via the touchscreen infotainment
system.
Since its introduction, InControl Apps has expanded to
feature sixteen compatible apps including Stitcher, Audiobooks and Rivet
Radio. The newest additions to the suite of available apps include:

Jaguar Land Rover has optimized justDrive for its InControl™ platform
for Apple iOS9 users. 'justDrive for Jaguar Land Rover' integrates
popular apps and services, services, such as Spotify, Twitter and Yelp,
to give Jaguar and Land Rover drivers an unprecedented level of
integration with navigation, media, social interaction, voice search and
information services while minimizing driver distraction.
Meridian™ Surround Sound
The
standard 380W Meridian Digital Sound System features 10 speakers and a
dual-channel subwoofer delivering exceptional definition. For the
ultimate in-car technology experience HSE Dynamic models are also

and the brand's high levels of refinement have both been thoroughly
proven with a rigorous development regime conducted on public roads and
test facilities throughout the world.

Significant chassis bracings support the unique load
casings of a convertible model, actually increasing torsional rigidity
over the coupe model. This ensures an on-road driving experience
comparable with the hard top model and a vehicle every bit as capable as
existing Range Rover Evoque derivatives.
In common with all
modern Land Rover projects, the development program of the Range Rover
Evoque Convertible began virtually with advanced Computer Aided
Engineering and Design simulations. These simulations provided accurate
initial estimations on how the altered weight distribution would affect
dynamic performance, where structural modifications would be required,
and how the Range Rover Evoque Convertible could meet the very same
engineering standards as existing Range Rover Evoque derivatives.
A
sophisticated prototype development phase subsequently allowed Land
Rover engineers to prove these simulations in real-world testing. The
result is a premium convertible SUV with safety, refinement and the on-
and off-road competence to match its head-turning design.
Complementing
its advanced four-wheel-drive system, the Range Rover Evoque
Convertible benefits from an inherently strong base structure with
high-strength steel in the door sills. This structure features added
chassis bracings to compensate for the removal of the roof, providing
the stiffness essential for excellent handling and refinement.
Enhancing
its dynamic capability further, the all-independent sports suspension
has optimized spring rates, incorporating larger diameter anti-roll bars
to deliver high levels of driver engagement, as well as roll stiffness
equivalent to coupe derivatives. Careful tuning ensures the vehicle's
exceptional ride quality has not been compromised.
Torque
Vectoring by Braking (TVbB) and Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS)
complement the chassis changes. Should understeer be detected as the
driver turns into a corner, TVbB is designed to apply a small braking
force to both inside wheels, helping the car follow the driver's
intended line.
The variable-rate Electric Power-Assisted Steering
(EPAS) equipped in the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is tuned for high
levels of response and driver feedback, as well as reducing driver
workload in challenging off-road environments. The variable-rate
steering rack combines a slower ratio around the straight-ahead position
with a progressively faster ratio once more steering lock is applied;
combining straight-line stability with increased agility through tighter
turns. Variable assistance provides lighter steering for enhanced
maneuverability in confined spaces and slow speeds, but a more
substantial, confidence-inspiring feel at speed.
Safety Features
To
maintain outstanding levels of crash protection, the Range Rover Evoque
Convertible features a number of engineering innovations: the vehicle's
A-pillars have been strengthened to provide enhanced roll-over
protection; new under-body bracing maintains the torsional rigidity of
coupe derivatives without impacting off-road capability; and a roll-over
protection system, concealed within the rear quarter, deploys in 90
milliseconds should a roll-over situation be detected.
A new seat
airbag system has also been developed: the front seats now include a
combined thorax and head airbag to offer the same level of protection as
the coupé's individual thorax and head airbags. A combination of
various electronic systems ensures the airbags or roll-over protection
system do not deploy in extreme off-road situations.
All-Terrain Capability
The
Range Rover Evoque Convertible has been tested in the same off-road
environments and to the same high standards as all Land Rover vehicles.
Punishing tests included loading the Range Rover Evoque Convertible to
its maximum gross vehicle weight and negotiating the toughest off-road
terrain; this test is designed to subject the chassis to immense
twisting forces. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible passed all
procedures and, as a result, achieves similarly outstanding off-road
performance to existing Range Rover Evoque Dynamic derivatives.

Bagnall, Range Rover Evoque Program Director, commented: "Roof down
motoring is in our heritage. It started 68 years ago when we produced
the original Series 1 Land Rover. We have tested the Range Rover Evoque
convertible to the same all-terrain standards as every Land Rover
vehicle before, and a few besides. Chassis bracings designed to preserve
the Range Rover Evoque Convertible's torsional rigidity have been
specially engineered to maintain excellent ground clearance that's
comparable with five-door and coupe models."
Approach, breakover
and departure angles of 19, 18.69 and 31.0 degrees respectively provide
outstanding all-terrain performance. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible
is designed to scale extremely steep 45-degree gradients, tilt to an
incredible 35 degrees, and wade through water up to 19.7-inches (500mm)
deep.
The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is equipped with a
variety of standard Land Rover off-road technologies, including the
proven Terrain Response® system.
Terrain Response® tailors
steering, throttle, transmission, center-coupling and braking/stability
response to the terrain via four driver-selectable settings: General;
Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts; and Sand.
Standard on the Range
Rover Evoque Convertible, Hill Descent Control (HDC®) is designed to
assist the driver with controlled descents of difficult slopes by
maintaining a constant speed and applying braking separately to each
wheel.
Hill Start Assist (HSA) is designed to prevent the vehicle
from rolling backwards as it pulls away on an incline while Gradient
Release Control (GRC) is designed to prevent the vehicle accelerating
too quickly on a steep incline if the driver inadvertently releases the
brake.
POWERTRAIN
The Range Rover Evoque
Convertible is available with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Producing
240-hp and 251-lb-ft of torque it provides responsive in-gear
acceleration, a 0-60mph time of just 7.8 seconds and a top speed of
112mph (180km/h).
The compact all-aluminum, four-cylinder design
features an advanced low-inertia turbocharger, high-pressure direct fuel
injection and twin independent variable-valve timing for instant
response. Twin balancer shafts ensure refinement meets the levels
demanded from all Range Rover vehicles.
Advanced fuel-saving
technologies include piston rings and tappets coated with a low-friction
finish; a sheet-metal exhaust manifold that shortens the engine warm-up
phase to reduce emissions on short journeys; and an advanced electronic
management system for precision control over the combustion process.
An
advanced ZF® 9-speed automatic transmission forms part of the vehicle's
standard specification. Designed specifically for its transverse
application, the ZF 9HP transmission features nine closely staggered
ratios for excellent acceleration and efficiency.
When the
ignition is activated, the rotary gear-shift controller with its tactile
knurled metal finish rises from the center console. The driver can opt
to leave the transmission in automatic mode, allowing the Adaptive Shift
Strategy to intelligently anticipate driver behavior. Alternatively,
gears can be manually selected via steering-wheel-mounted paddleshift
interface for ultimate control.
First gear is an incredibly low
ratio, and suitable for very brisk acceleration from a standstill,
low-speed all-terrain driving or extremes of altitude and gradient. The
Range Rover Evoque Convertible will automatically default to second gear
- comparable to first gear in transmissions with fewer ratios - at a
standstill, ensuring peerless refinement and efficiency from rest. At
the opposite end of the spectrum, ninth gear offers a reduced engine
speed suitable for motorway cruising.
Active Driveline Four-Wheel Drive
Active
Driveline offered as standard equipment, increases both efficiency and
agility. During steady-state driving at speeds above 22mph (35km/h),
Active Driveline switches from four- to two-wheel drive, reducing
driveline friction to increase efficiency. The system continuously
monitors traction and driver inputs, and can seamlessly revert to
four-wheel-drive operation in just 350 milliseconds.
A pair of
electronically controlled clutches located either side of the rear
differential also increases on- and off-road capability with Active
Driveline. The clutches quickly distribute torque to the rear wheel with
superior grip, improving traction in low-grip off-road situations as
well as heightening driver engagement on road.
Occupants can
monitor the status of the Active Driveline system by swiping to the 4x4i
function on the all-new Land Rover InControl® Touch Pro™ touch-screen
infotainment system.
Torque Vectoring by Braking (TVbB) monitors
dynamic behavior and operates on all four wheels. Should understeer be
detected, TVbB is designed to apply a small braking force to the outside
front wheels, subtly tightening the car's line for additional agility.
ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGIES
The
Range Rover Evoque Convertible HSE Dynamic is available with a full
suite of optional Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems. These include:
360 degree Parking Aid
360-degree
Park Distance Controls provide the driver with virtual object tracking
along the sides of the car, giving confidence in confined situations,
like multi-story parking garages, at speeds up to 10mph (16 km/h).
Autonomous Emergency Braking
Autonomous
Emergency Braking helps mitigate accidents when the vehicle is
travelling at speeds below 21mph (35km/h), and is designed to reduce the
severity of any impacts between 32-50mph (50-80km/h).
The system
uses a stereo camera mounted next to the rear-view mirror to monitor
objects that pose a risk of collision, such as queuing traffic. If a
collision is likely, the system is designed to alert the driver with
both a visual and audible warning. If no avoiding action is taken, an
additional driver warning is triggered while the system applies maximum
braking pressure to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop. Autonomous
Emergency Braking is available when either Lane-Keeping Assist or
Lane-Departure Warning systems are specified.
Lane-Departure Warning and Lane-Keeping Assist
Complementing
Lane-Departure Warning, which warns the driver if they are drifting out
of their lane by vibrating the steering wheel, Lane-Keeping Assist
actively helps the driver stay in the correct lane by adding any
necessary steering correction.
The technology works by combining
input from the forward-facing stereo camera to monitor road markings, as
well as the electric power-assisted steering system.
Should
Lane-Keeping Assist sense that the driver is unintentionally changing
lanes, it initiates a gentle steering input to return the vehicle to its
intended position. Lane-Keeping Assist is designed to be completely
unobtrusive: it is not active if the turn signals are activated, the
driver can easily steer against it, and the system can be entirely
disengaged if desired.
Driver Condition Monitor
Driver
Condition Monitor reviews driver steering inputs to guard against a
driver falling asleep at the wheel. Should this advanced technology
detect the jerky, non-linear movements typical of driver suffering the
symptoms of fatigue, it automatically triggers both an audible warning
and a visual warning in the instrument cluster.
The Range Rover
Evoque Convertible also features a number of additional driver
assistance technologies including Traffic Sign Recognition which scans
the road ahead for certain road signs and, if detected, will display the
information to the driver via the instrument cluster or Head-Up
display.
EXTENSIVE TESTING PROGRAM
Since
its launch, the Range Rover Evoque has been lauded for its driving
dynamics and all-terrain capability. To ensure the Range Rover Evoque
Convertible retains a similarly impressive breadth of capability, Land
Rover chassis engineers undertook a rigorous test schedule on roads
ranging from high-speed autobahns, to tight and challenging hairpins in
the Italian Dolomites. Extensive development was also carried out on
wet-handling test tracks, frozen lakes in Sweden and race circuits
including the Nürburgring Nordschleife to further refine chassis
settings.
Verification prototypes covered hundreds of thousands of
miles on test tracks, off-road facilities and public roads around the
world, including in Canada, Dubai, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain,
Sweden, USA and the UK. Extremes of temperature, altitude and endurance
tested the Range Rover Evoque Convertible to its limits in a punishing
program. Other vehicles were run around the clock on data rigs with
hydraulic rams simulating particularly harsh full-life mileages.
As
a result, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible delivers comparable levels
of composure, agility and off-road capability to the coupe and
five-door derivatives and remains equally rewarding to drive, no matter
how challenging the terrain.

The
combination of weight distribution of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible
and revised chassis settings required all parameters governing
stability control, ABS, four-wheel drive and Terrain Response® settings
to be recalibrated on a comprehensive range of surfaces. Evaluation near
the Arctic Circle alone lasted for four months where temperatures
frequently fell below minus 22-degrees Fahrenheit (minus 30-degrees
Celsius).
Designed and engineered at the Land Rover development
center in the UK, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible will be built
alongside the five-door and coupe derivatives at the company's
award-winning Halewood manufacturing plant, supported by the UK
Government's Regional Growth Fund. It goes on sale mid-2016 in over 170
markets worldwide.
The Big Apple played host to the world debut of the all-new 2017 Kia Cadenza at the 2015 New York International Auto Show. The stunningly beautiful Cadenza improves upon all the elements that made its predecessor an award-winning success, boasting a precisely crafted cabin, cutting edge technology for connectivity and driver assistance, a stronger body structure, and powertrain enhancements for a more premium experience behind the wheel.
"The new Cadenza adds an extra dose of excitement to the large-car segment with its striking, aggressively handsome looks and premium refinements," said Orth Hedrick, vice president of product planning, Kia Motors America. "Everything you see and touch in the Cadenza's cabin has been improved, but it's underneath where the Cadenza truly shines with a stiffer and lighter chassis, eight-speed transmission and vastly improved driving dynamics."
The second-generation Kia Cadenza is set to go on-sale in late 2016. Elegant and Confident Exterior
Designed at Kia's California design studio, birthplace of the unforgettable Track'ster and GT4 Stinger concepts as well as the iconic Soul, the Kia Cadenza's precision-machined exterior exudes confidence, with clean lines offset by expressive details. It all starts with Kia Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer's oft-quoted philosophy focusing on "the simplicity of the straight line," which is defined by a single gestural contour that spans the length of the car, creating a sleek profile. This lineation visually links matching Z-shaped lighting signatures in the headlights and LED tail lights, affording the all-new Cadenza a more distinctive road presence, day or night. The overall impression is one of modernity and power, which is achieved by visually shearing away surface area to create a more angular form.
Head on, the Kia Cadenza is more expressive thanks to the newly designed front fascia. While the signature Kia "tiger nose" grille is still an unmistakable design trait, it has evolved into a new hexagonal shape that emphasizes the Cadenza's visual width with lines extending underneath the headlights. But the more substantial change to the grille is its distinct concave form, which curves in toward the engine bay, giving the Kia Cadenza its handsomely chiseled face.
Unlike other cars in the segment, the Cadenza is available with two different grilles. Lower trim models will come with the "Diamond Butterfly" front grille that features the same three-dimensional pattern as several siblings within the Kia lineup, but has its own unique appearance thanks to the concave shape. Higher trim models will come with the "Intaglio" grille, featuring vertically oriented, faceted blades.
LED technology inside the "piano key" taillights helps create visual depth while also complementing the Z-shape lighting signature. Other thoughtful details include the chrome garnish that extends through the trunk lid, accentuating the Cadenza's wide stance, and tasteful chrome accents on the side mirrors and rear quarter windows.
Exterior styling is further enhanced by optimized dimensions. While the new Kia Cadenza has the same overall length as the outgoing model, it's slightly wider and lower in height. The wheelbase has been stretched slightly, contributing to nearly a half-inch of increased legroom for rear passengers. Achieving Cadenza's sportier profile was achieved by extending the roofline rearward more than two inches, while maintaining rear headroom and slightly improving trunk space.
Exquisitely Comfortable Interior Space
The interior is thoughtfully redesigned with even higher quality materials than the preceding model and higher levels of craftsmanship throughout. Like the exterior, the Cadenza's soft interior contours are offset by sheared surfaces. Kia designers visually widened the Kia Cadenza's interior space with a wraparound dashboard that flows into the door panels and features real stitching. The door panels themselves have been adorned with higher quality soft-touch materials, while soft leather envelopes the Cadenza's cabin space. Nappa leather is available with quilted seat bolsters accented by diamond shaped stitching that dresses up the Cadenza's already attractive cabin. For 2017, buyers have greater opportunity to customize their Kia Cadenza, as a dark brown interior color has been added, bringing the total number of color combinations to four. Like the outgoing model, the White Package remains an option, but it has been upgraded with a new black wood-grain-style trim finished with a pearlescent sheen.
Improvements were made throughout to ensure a more pleasant driving experience. The driver's seat has been lowered for a sportier and more stable feeling, while engineers extended the seat cushion slightly and developed an innovative cushion extension mechanism that slides and rotates, making it easier for drivers to find their comfort zone behind the wheel. The heating elements used for the seat warmers have been reengineered to more evenly distribute warmth, and as a Kia first, the seat heaters now utilize a smart control system to automatically lower the heater operating mode after a certain period of time.
The 2017 Cadenza is built upon a strong foundation with a body structure composed of more than 50 percent Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) - more than twice the amount used in the outgoing model. Engineers are targeting an overall five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A driver's knee airbag helps in this regard and brings the total number of airbags in the vehicle to nine.
The first Kia to be sold in the U.S. under the DRIVE WISE sub-brand, the Cadenza offers cutting-edge driver assistance features such as Advanced Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go functionality, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Lane Departure Warning. Another Kia first is the Smart Blind Spot Detection System which senses unintentional drifting toward an adjacent vehicle and automatically brakes the opposite side front wheel to help maintain the vehicle's intended course.
Side body panels are stronger and feature increased tensile strength steel to improve Cadenza's dent resistance. Thanks to the increased use of structural adhesive and hot-stamped components, structural stiffness has been increased by more than 35 percent, which also improves driving dynamics. The overall chassis is lighter, thanks to the use of aluminum instead of steel in areas like the front steering knuckles, and engineers retuned the front and rear subframes with larger bushings to improve lateral stiffness and NVH characteristics. Further improving the ride are Amplitude Selective Damping (ASD) shock absorbers that maximize ride comfort without sacrificing stability. An extra valve in the damper provides the appropriate damping force according to the road surface, while the new shock absorber now includes a Hydraulic Rebound Stopper (HRS), which works to provide a smoother ride over harsh or broken surfaces. The retuned suspension has improved the Kia Cadenza's lift coefficient (the up-and-down forces exerted on a moving vehicle), and the end result is better high-speed stability and handling. Steering is more responsive than before with better on-center feel thanks to a new 32-bit Electronic Control Unit (ECU), replacing the 16-bit processor in the outgoing model.
The 2017 Cadenza's confident ride and handling are complemented by improvements in NVH. Additional acoustic absorbing laminate in the front windows and windshield reduces wind noise, while a full floorpan undercover quells road noise. Together with increased insulation around the A-pillars, NVH levels have been substantially reduced, resulting in a library-quiet interior. The floorpan undercover also helps improve the Cadenza's aerodynamic performance, along with front wheel air curtains that reduce drag around the tires. Overall, the coefficient of drag has improved from 0.29 to 0.28.
Newly designed 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels may be shod with available Michelin® tires (P245/45R18 or P245/40R19). Behind the wheels, larger brake rotors improve overall braking performance and feel. The front brakes have been increased from 11 to 12 inches, while the rears have grown marginally from 11 to 11.1 inches, helping to reduce stopping distances.
Harmonious and Modern Cockpit
Brimming with technology, the cockpit is designed to provide a more harmonious human-machine interface with ergonomically intelligent design, intuitive controls, and a suite of enhanced convenience features making the driving experience enjoyable and effortless. New to the 2017 Cadenza is the Head Up Display (HUD), which shows key driver information such as speed and turn-by-turn navigation directions on the windshield directly in the driver's line of sight. In addition, the Surround View Monitor has been updated with improved software and resolution that gives the driver a clearer birds-eye view of the area around the vehicle, with newly added reverse guidelines offering confidence when backing into confined spaces. Other features new to the Kia Cadenza include Smart Trunk, which conveniently opens the trunk lid if the sensor detects the key fob for more than three seconds, and a wireless smartphone charger. The latest generation of Kia's UVO system featuring Android Auto and Apple® CarPlay is standard, while a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon® system featuring Clari-Fi™6 music restoration technology is an option.
Efficient and Durable Performance
Underneath the hood is a revised version of Kia's 3.3-liter V6 engine, which has been retuned for improved fuel economy. With an estimated 290 hp on tap (exact power output and fuel economy figures will be released closer to the vehicle's on-sale date), the engine sends power to the front wheels via Kia's first FWD-based eight-speed automatic transmission. The newly developed transmission is highly efficient, providing quick and crisp shifts for a more enjoyable driving experience that will set it apart from its competitors. Despite having two extra cogs, the eight-speed transmission, which was designed in-house, is lighter than the unit in the outgoing model.
Kia engineers also focused on durability and reliability during the development of the all-new Cadenza. Running the V6 at full power and under full-load conditions for 41 consecutive days equates to more than 100,000 miles of real-world use, providing owners with the confidence that the 2017 Kia Cadenza is built for the long haul.
The new Porsche Panamera reconciles two contrasting characteristics more than ever before: the performance of a genuine sports car and the comfort of a luxury saloon. It is a Gran Turismo that has been rethought and realigned. The second generation of the Panamera is advancing to become a performance icon of the luxury class.
In this transformation, Porsche has systematically improved the Panamera concept - with a four-door car that has been redeveloped and redesigned down to the last detail. Its engines and transmissions have been redesigned, its chassis perfected, and its display and control concept reinterpreted for the future. The new Panamera also extends the borders between the world of ambitious sports cars and the world of comfortable cruising cars with highlights such as rear axle steering, active roll compensation and three-chamber air suspension.
911 design language with a much more dynamic flyline
Visually, the unique concept of this large Porsche is reflected in a new expressive design: unmistakably a Panamera, unmistakably a sports car - with long, dynamic proportions, pronounced shoulders, athletic flanks and an extremely fast roof line that is 20 mm lower at the rear. This typical Porsche flyline creates a stylistic link to Porsche's design icon, the 911.
Plenty of functionality and easy interaction in the Porsche Advanced Cockpit
The typical Porsche interior has been reinterpreted for the future in the new Panamera. Black panel surfaces and interactive displays combine a clear and intuitive user interface like that of smartphones and tablets with the practical requirements for controlling the car. Classic hard keys and conventional instruments have been reduced significantly. They have been replaced by touch-sensitive panels and individually configurable displays which take centre stage in the new Porsche Advanced Cockpit - with great benefits for the driver as well as the front and rear passengers. Despite a significantly extended range of communication, convenience and assistance systems, different functions can now be used and operated more clearly and intuitively. The Porsche Advanced Cockpit transforms the analogue world into the digital present of mobility, while leaving room for passion. The tachometer, positioned centrally in the instrument cluster, is a tribute to the 1955 Porsche 356 A.
New V6 and V8 biturbo engines with ample power and full-bodied sound
A Porsche has always impressed with more than just power; its efficiency is equally important. To elevate this formula to a new level, all of the second generation Panamera's engines have been redesigned. They have all been made more powerful, while significantly improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Three new biturbo direct injection engines are being introduced at the market launch: in the Panamera Turbo, the Panamera 4S and the Panamera 4S Diesel. All of them - and for the first time including the diesel - may be equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system and a new eight-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK). A V8 petrol engine that delivers 404 kW / 550 hp powers the Panamera Turbo and a V6 petrol engine with 324 kW / 440 hp drives the Panamera 4S.
In the Panamera 4S Diesel, a V8 with 310 kW/422 hp generates powerful thrust and a maximum torque of 850 Nm.
In keeping with the overall concept of the new Panamera, the chassis also unites the cruising comfort of a luxury saloon with the performance of a true sports car. This is achieved by supplementing the impressive basic layout with optional innovative systems such as an adaptive air suspension with new three-chamber technology, including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM electronic damper control), the enhanced Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) system including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and active roll stabilisation, as well as a new electromechanical steering system. The integrated 4D Chassis Control system analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time and optimises the road performance of the new Panamera. Porsche is also taking the steering precision and handling of sports cars into the class of Gran Turismo cars with rear axle steering - which is also new and has been adapted from the 918 Spyder and 911 Turbo. Brake performance has also been improved.
Next generation assistance systems
The Panamera is equipped with many standard and optional assistance systems, which make life while driving more convenient and safer. The most important new systems include a night vision assistant, which uses a thermal imaging camera to detect people and large animals and displays a colour highlighted warning indicator in the cockpit. If the optional new LED matrix headlights with 84 image points are selected, people beyond the visual range of the dipped beam headlight are also illuminated briefly if they are in the computed driving corridor, allowing the driver to react even faster. The new night vision assistant is one of the assistance systems that helps to avoid critical situations in advance. Looking especially far ahead along the road is the new Porsche InnoDrive, which includes adaptive cruise control. Based on navigation data and signals from radar and video sensors, it computes and activates the optimal acceleration and deceleration rates as well as gear selections and coasting phases, for the next three kilometres. In doing so, this electronic co-pilot automatically takes bends, inclines and speed limits into account.
The new Porsche Panamera can already be ordered now, and it will make its appearance at dealers on November 5, 2016. Prices in Germany start at 113,027 euros including VAT for the Panamera 4S. Prices for the Panamera 4S Diesel start at 116,954 euros, and the Panamera Turbo starts at 153,011 euros.
More power, better fuel efficiency
New, powerful and fuel-efficient: the V6 and V8 turbo engines of the Panamera. And they all share a special conceptual design characteristic, which in the jargon of engine developers is known as "with the hot sides inward".
Translated, this means that the turbochargers of the new Panamera engines are integrated centrally into the V of the cylinder banks. This central turbo layout yields numerous benefits: The engines are more compact, and this enables a lower mounting position. This, in turn, has a positive effect on the vehicle's centre of gravity. The short paths between the two turbochargers and the combustion chambers produce spontaneous throttle response. Engine response can be further increased using the optional Mode Switch with the Sport Response Button. The Mode Switch, which was first introduced in the Porsche 918 Spyder, is an intuitively operated rotary ring on the steering wheel, which can be used to activate one of four driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus or Individual). Located at the centre of the switch is the Sport Response Button. It can be used to free up the maximum power potential of the Panamera at the press of a button.
Initially, the Panamera Turbo has the most powerful petrol engine of the model series. Its 4.0-litre biturbo V8 develops 404 kW / 550 hp (at 5,750 rpm) and a maximum torque of 770 Nm (between 1,960 and 4,500 rpm). It has 30 hp more power than the previous model, and its maximum torque has been increased by 70 Nm. The eight-cylinder engine accelerates the Panamera Turbo to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds; with the Sport Chrono Package the sprint time is just 3.6 seconds. The Porsche can reach a top speed of 306 km/h. These are impressive figures that illustrate just how easily the engine can propel the Panamera with its power-to-weight ratio of just 3.6 kg/hp. These extraordinary performance figures contrast with lower combined fuel consumption figures which, at 9.4 - 9.3 l/100 km, are up to 1.1 l/100 km less than that of the previous model (New European Driving Cycle or NEDC). These figures equate to CO2 emissions of 214 - 212 g/km.
Porsche uses complex twin-scroll turbochargers to supply compressed air to the V8's combustion chambers. The two counter-rotating chargers produce maximum torque figures at very low engine speeds. The Panamera Turbo is also the first Porsche to be equipped with the new adaptive cylinder control in its engine. In part-load operation, the system temporarily and imperceptibly turns the eight-cylinder into a four-cylinder engine. This reduces fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent, depending on power demand in the four-cylinder phases.
The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Panamera 4S develops a maximum power of 324 kW/440 hp (20 hp more than the previous model); it is already available at 5,650 rpm. Between 1,750 and 5,500 rpm, the new six-cylinder delivers 550 Nm (30 Nm more) to the drive axles. The Panamera 4S can reach 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds (4.2 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package). With a top speed of 289 km/h, this Porsche also approaches the 300 km/h mark. The NEDC combined fuel consumption is 8.2 - 8.1 l/100 km (186 - 184 g/km CO2). Compared to the first generation Panamera 4S, this represents a fuel saving of up to 1.0 l/100 km or eleven per cent.
Like the eight-cylinder engine of the Panamera Turbo, the six-cylinder engine of the Panamera 4S also has petrol direct-injection injectors that are positioned in the combustion chamber. This injector position offers optimal combustion, maximum efficiency and very good engine response. The 4S and Turbo are also characterised by exceptionally full-bodied and authentic sound.
The new Panamera is launching with a new eight-cylinder diesel engine, for the first time in conjunction with permanent all-wheel drive. The most powerful diesel implemented in a Porsche production car to date develops a power of 310 kW/422 hp (at 3,500 rpm) and an immense maximum torque of 850 Nm - which is constant over an engine speed plateau extending from 1,000 to 3,250 rpm. With a top speed of 285 km/h, the Porsche Panamera 4S Diesel is currently the world's fastest production vehicle with a diesel engine. The Gran Turismo reaches the 100 km/h speed mark in 4.5 seconds (4.3 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package). This contrasts with a combined fuel consumption of 6.8 - 6.7 l/100 km (178 - 176 g/km CO2).
The diesel model also has biturbo charging with a central turbo layout. However, its common rail engine (2,500 bar maximum injection pressure) is equipped with sequential turbocharging. This allows the engine to work as a biturbo or monoturbo, depending on the operating state. At low to moderate engine speeds, the entire stream of exhaust gas is directed solely through one of the two turbochargers, which improves throttle response. The otherwise passive second turbocharger does not become active until the engine speed reaches 2,700 rpm or more. Both turbochargers have variable turbine geometry (VTG) - a principle that is already familiar from the 911 Turbo.
Even more dynamic proportions
The exterior character of the Panamera has also been sharpened with the dawn of the second generation. It is based on very dynamic proportions. The new Panamera is 5,049 mm (+34 mm) long, 1,937 mm (+6 mm) wide and 1,423 mm (+5 mm) tall. Despite the slight increase in height, the four-door car looks much lower and longer.
This is primarily due to the reduced height above the rear of the passenger compartment - reduced by 20 mm - while maintaining consistently good headroom. This changes the car's overall image completely. The wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm to 2,950 mm; this too lengthens the car's proportions. The front wheels were shifted further forward, reducing the front overhang and making the prestige dimension - the distance between the A-pillar and the front axle - even larger. The rear overhang is longer, giving the car a more powerful appearance.
The Panamera has only grown six millimetres in width, but it feels like several centimetres. This effect is created by such features as the A-shaped air intake, which extends out to the sides and creates a completely new front-end design. At the same time, a precisely designed crossbar in the radiator grille emphasises the car's width. The arrow-shaped bonnet over the engine accelerates this visual effect further forward and lower than before - due to the prominently contoured powerdome, whose lines now reach into the bumper. The lower front end was enabled by the new compact construction of the engines in the vehicle concept. To the left and right of the powerdome, the bonnet blends precisely into the stronger flares of the front wings - a typical Porsche design trait. Also exuding confidence is the look of the LED headlights with their four-point LED daytime running lights, of which three versions are available.
The new side body - like the bonnet, boot, roof and wings - is made entirely of aluminium, and it accentuates the silhouette of a sports car more than ever thanks to its dynamic roof line. At the rear, this roof line becomes the charismatic Porsche flyline - the distinctive lines that adorn all of the brand's coupés. Two precisely executed edges on the lateral roof line visually lower the silhouette's centre of gravity. The look of the side windows has also been redesigned: its visually continuous surface, together with its lines on the rear body, creates a stylistic affinity to the Porsche 911. Three-dimensionality characterises the doors and wings, where incident light shining on their convex and concave surfaces generates muscular tension. Integral design components there are the air exhaust ports behind the front wheels. The flared lips of the wheel arches are also powerful. The large arches provide space for the 19-inch (4S/4S Diesel), 20-inch (Turbo) and optional 21-inch alloy wheels.
The fact that the Panamera is a four-door coupé and not a conventional saloon is clearer from the rear than from any other perspective. The 'greenhouse' - made up of the roof, roof pillars, window surfaces - is supported by a powerful and broad shoulder section. Clearly a Panamera, definitely a sports car. The most prominent components identifying the rear body are, without a doubt, the three-dimensional LED rear lights with integrated four-point brake lights. The rear lights are interconnected by a narrow LED strip. All of these elements together create an unmistakable night design. Integrated seamlessly and elegantly into the boot, which features electric opening and closing as standard, is the extendible rear spoiler that is now finished in body colour. On the Panamera Turbo, the wing also splits as it extends, thereby gaining additional surface area. Terminating the lower rear body is a diffuser into which the dual stainless steel tailpipes of the exhaust system are integrated on the left and right. The Panamera 4S and 4S Diesel can be recognised by their round tailpipes, while the Panamera Turbo has trapezoidal tailpipe trims. Porsche operating philosophy - future-based interpretation
The new Panamera exhibits a completely new interior design. In many areas, touch-sensitive surfaces replace classic hard keys, and high-resolution displays merge into the interior. In the luxury saloon segment, the digitalisation of the Porsche interior, which began with the 918 Spyder, has reached the next development stage aboard the Panamera in the form of the new Porsche Advanced Cockpit.
From the low seat position typical of sports cars, drivers not only see a fascinating front-end landscape of the car's wings and powerdome, but also two 7-inch displays that are placed directly in the driver's line of sight for ideal ergonomics. Located in the middle of these two displays is the tachometer, which is still an analogue instrument. Meanwhile, the gearshift console between the driver and the front passenger is dominated by the 12.3-inch touchscreen of the next generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. The driver and front passenger can configure this display individually. Naturally, this is integrated into the PCM: Features such as online navigation, the online functions of Porsche Connect, smartphone integration via Apple Car Play and a new voice control system that responds to natural language input. The PCM area - with its high-end, high-resolution display - transitions harmoniously into the black panel concept of the centre console with a shift-by-wire gear selector for the PDK. A new control panel with touch-sensitive switches on the centre console enables intuitive control of various functions. Even the louvres of the central air vent are electrically adjusted by touch-sensitive sliders. Rear passengers can control air conditioning and infotainment functions using an optional four-zone automatic climate control system.
In addition, the Porsche Panamera offers the best layout variability of any model in the luxury class, making it the most practical for everyday use with a 40:20:40 split of the folding rear bench backrests (495 to 1,304 litres of luggage capacity). Raising the comfort experience of the Panamera to an entirely new level are new equipment options such as the panoramic tilt roof, massage seats, ambient lighting and a 3D high-end sound system from Burmester.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
The Genesis G80
expresses a truly modern design through distinctive exterior styling
with a sleek, upscale appearance. The G80 features a striking hexagonal
front grille as a key geometric element, an elegant crease accent
running along the flanks of the car, and a dynamic rear design. Design
surfaces convey a kinetic elegance, relying more on voluminous body
sections than surface details to create dramatic forms.
The
single-frame crest grille ensures the front end of the Genesis G80 is
not only striking, depicted in semi-gloss chrome, but also encompasses
standard Bi-Xenon HID headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights and
available LED fog lights. The profile of the G80 is expressive, with
fluid lines and blended surfaces, and a sleek C-pillar helping to
emphasize the sporty styling. The rear of the vehicle benefits from a
sculptural aesthetic with jeweled and full-LED wrap-around taillights
that provide a sense of visual width and feeling of stability.
MODERN INTERIOR DESIGN
The cabin layout of
Genesis G80 has been designed to benefit all occupants with a spacious,
comfortable ambience. The simplified switchgear and instrument panel
ensure an intuitive layout and open feel. This user-centric design has
sought to connect the various interior parts effectively, particularly
the center stack with the console, upper-instrument panel and B-pillar
with the headliner. The G80 displays an ultra-precise fit and finish,
with ergonomic seat design and a generous, natural feel. Particular
design attention has been paid to the storage of practical items such as
mobile electronics of many shapes and sizes, along with the flexibility
of the cup holders.
Total interior volume is an impressive 123.0
cubic feet which includes an expansive 15.3 cubic feet of cargo volume,
offering a clear advantage over segment competitors. As part of this
spacious interior design, the G80 provides best-in-class front leg room,
head room and rear shoulder room.
The Genesis design team focused
on the interior design principles - safety, intuitiveness and
simplicity - in designing all primary controls to deliver maximum ease
of use. Ease of reach and control have been meticulously evaluated and
executed using a specially-designed laboratory tool created to measure
occupant operational force for optimal ergonomics.
The G80's
interior surfaces have been developed to decrease relative interior
reflections and brighten dashboard surfaces, while available high-grade
materials such as genuine aluminum and matte-finish wood ensure a
luxurious feel. Cohesion between the center fascia and audio controls is
evident through its streamlined design, making the two separate
sections appear as one. To further ensure harmony within the interior,
the G80 was intensely scrutinized for its use of materials, with
extensive analysis of the relationship of different materials, their
texture and color coordination.
Driver and passenger posture are
optimized using enhanced seat pad density, improved seat support
technologies, such as adjustable driver's seat power bolsters and seat
cushion extension. The G80 offers standard 12-way power front seats,
including 4-way power lumbar, heated front seats with available
ventilation, as well as heated rear seats on HTRAC AWD models. Seat
materials and stitching quality utilize double, rather than single
stitching. The driver's seat incorporates functionality with an
available air-pressure pump and controller valve, providing seatback
bolster adjustment through individual air-cells located in the seat.
With a total operating time under 8-seconds, the G80 benefits from both a
faster activation process and greater range of adjustment than many
competitive rivals.
ULTRA-RIGID PLATFORM
The
2017 Genesis G80 platform employs advanced high-strength steel,
composing more than 50 percent of its total platform composition. The
strategic benefits of high-strength steel are immediately evident in the
G80's torsional and bending rigidity - it is stiffer in both torsional
and bending rigidity than the BMW 5-series.
Ensuring a smooth ride
over rough roads was a top development focus, achieved by a robust
connecting structure, extensive laser welding, reinforced body and
chassis mounting points, hot stamping and dipping techniques for the
B-pillar and roof sides, and a high level of high-strength steel in the
chassis. Front shock towers are made of aluminum, and a diamond-shaped
strut bar maximizes front structure rigidity for precise steering
response.
Sustained durability and high-performance handling
driving tests took place on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in
Germany to precisely calibrate ride, braking and handling
characteristics.
PERFORMANCE CHASSIS
Fully
leveraging this rigid chassis is a rear multi-link suspension, with
optimized 5-link geometry and increased suspension travel for a broad
range of both dynamic performance and ride comfort. Lateral suspension
stiffness and overall ride comfort refinement were top priorities in its
dynamic development. The fully-independent, 5-link front and rear
suspension designs increase suspension travel, for greater wheel
articulation and bump absorption over a variety of road surfaces.
18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels resist deflection forces for precise
suspension response to changing road surfaces. Handling and road holding
also benefit from a well-balanced 52/48 ratio of front-to-rear weight
distribution.
In addition, special focus was given to the
development of Rack-mounted Motor Driven Electric Power Steering
(R-MDPS), with a Variable Gear Ratio (VGR), helping to provide
high-speed stability and a direct feel at low and medium speeds. These
driving qualities are attained while retaining the incremental fuel
economy benefits of an electric system over the higher parasitic losses
of hydraulic systems.
HTRAC® AWD AVAILABILITY
The
Genesis G80 is offered with a choice of rear-wheel-drive or HTRAC®
All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) configurations. The HTRAC AWD system was developed
as a multi-mode system, providing an electronic, variable-torque-split
clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles.
The
driver-selectable HTRAC Normal and Sport modes help provide confident
control in all-weather conditions. The Sport setting gives a more agile
feel by sending more available torque to the rear wheels, for a sporty
rear-drive dynamic feel when desired. Further, to maximize efficiency,
the system can direct more available torque to the rear wheels during
steady-state highway cruising for reduced drivetrain frictional losses
and noise. This system has a wider range of torque distribution
variability than many competitive systems and has been tuned to variable
conditions such as straight-line acceleration, medium- and high-speed
cornering, and hill-starts. All modes are programmed in concert with
Genesis' Intelligent Drive Mode select.
POWERFUL 5.0-LITER V8 ENGINE
The
heart of the Genesis G80 is the award-winning 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine
producing 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 383 lb. ft. of torque at 5,000
rpm. The Tau V8 engine family has been named to Ward's prestigious Ten
Best Engines list three times. With high-pressure direct injection for
impressive power, low emissions and superb efficiency, this latest
version of the Tau V8 benefits from an optimized intake runner length,
enhanced timing chain for reduced friction and NVH, low-torque exhaust
manifold, increased compression ratio and upgraded multiple-injection
mapping. These enhancements combine to produce a flatter torque curve at
lower rpm for even better driveability.
The Tau's high 11.8:1
compression ratio increases thermal efficiency and output. The Tau also
has a rigid bed plate for improved block rigidity and lower NVH (Noise,
Vibration, and Harshness), as well as camshaft carriers and a roller
timing chain to improve valvetrain stability. Even more, this V8 offers
Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), a tuned variable
induction system, and low-friction coatings on piston skirts. This Tau
engine will also run on regular fuel with only a small reduction in peak
power, and no negative driving effects, whenever desired.
The Tau
5.0-liter V8 is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that
offers enhanced shift logic and speed, better acceleration, sport-mode
mapping, shifting smoothness and transmission efficiency. All
eight-speed transmissions include SHIFTRONIC® manual shift capability
with conveniently-located steering wheel paddle shifters to enhance
shifting ease.
DIRECT-INJECTED LAMBDA 3.8-LITER V6 ENGINE
The
Genesis G80 3.8-liter direct-injected Lambda engine is optimized to
deliver a flatter overall torque curve at low rpm for superb
drivability. This engine includes a three-stage variable intake system,
triangular-pattern fuel injector for improved combustion, an air-gap
exhaust manifold for better NVH, and an upgraded cylinder block with a
variable-vane 2-stage oil pump for reduced parasitic losses. In keeping
with its 5.0-liter V8 sibling, the G80 3.8-liter Lambda engine utilizes
direct-injection and produces 311 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 293
lb.-ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm, delivering the most standard horsepower
against key segment competitors. It also has a high compression ratio of
11.5:1 for greater thermal efficiency. The Lambda engine will run on
regular fuel with only a small reduction in peak power, and no negative
driving effects.
The 3.8-liter engine also has Dual Continuously
Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), variable induction, an all-aluminum
block and heads, steel timing chain and iridium-tipped spark plugs.
Besides horsepower and torque gains, direct-injection technology
produces a significant reduction in emissions. All 3.8-liter engines are
coupled to the same eight-speed automatic transmission as the
5.0-liter.
In addition, all powertrains feature a
driver-selectable Intelligent Drive Mode that allows users to select
from four drive modes depending on conditions and driving preferences.
Each drive mode alters transmission mapping, throttle responsiveness and
stability control, with specific modes adapted to function seamlessly
for G80s equipped with HTRAC.
In addition to the above modes,
Genesis features an Emergency Steering Support Mode which automatically
changes the setting of electronic stability control (ESC) in the
direction suitable for emergency steering, to help avoid frontal crash
situations.
UNPARALLELED SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES
The
Genesis G80 employs an unrivaled standard suite of active driver safety
technologies. These features cover the full spectrum of safety, from
driver alertness and focus to total occupant safety, and even the safety
of other drivers on the road.
The G80 offers Automatic Emergency
Braking (AEB), using sensor fusion technology to help avoid a potential
collision or reduce its impact in certain circumstances. With this
supplemental system, the G80 will employ automatic braking when it
detects another vehicle at an unsafe closing rate of speed. This system
uses Smart Cruise Control and the forward camera from Lane Departure

The G80's
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) incorporates stop-start functionality that
operates seamlessly with the standard electronic stability control
system. This feature allows full function down to zero mph in
stop-and-go traffic conditions, using the front-grille-mounted radar
sensor. SCC enables the G80 to maintain safer, consistent spacing with
the vehicle ahead in varied traffic conditions. The system can also help
deploy the Automatic Emergency Braking system should an impending
collision situation be detected with a vehicle ahead.
In addition,
the G80 features Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Lane Change Assist
(LCA) and Rear Cross-traffic Alert (RCTA). The BSD system helps monitor
traffic around the car by using radar sensors in the rear bumper to warn
the driver of an approaching vehicle in his or her blind spot via an
indicator on the side mirrors. If the driver activates the lane change
indicator and attempts to change lanes, ignoring warning indicators, BSD
additionally issues an audible warning and haptic steering wheel
vibrations. In addition, for G80s equipped with the Head's-Up Display,
the BSD system indicators also project onto the windshield, nearer to
the driver's view of the road, a segment first.
Using the same
sensors as BSD, Lane Change Assist (LCA) performs a similar function to
help detect vehicles approaching in adjacent lanes at high speeds and
warns the driver if a lane change is unsafe. Rear Cross-traffic Alert
(RCTA) also utilizes those sensors to scan areas on each side of the car
while in reverse to detect any unseen cross-traffic.
From the
front, the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system uses the forward-facing
camera to detect lane departure, and will activate a warning signal on
the instrument panel while issuing a haptic steering wheel vibration
warning. Working in concert with LDW, Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
additionally provides a driver-adjustable level of steering assist to
help prevent inadvertent lane departure and provides haptic steering
wheel vibration feedback.
For extra convenience and safety, the
G80 is equipped with High-beam Assist (HBA) to detect both oncoming
traffic and vehicles in the same lane ahead at night.
The feature
will automatically switch between high-beams and low-beams as
appropriate, to reduce the blinding effect on other drivers and
re-activate high beams to improve the driver's range of vision. To
maximize driving visibility, the G80 also features HID headlights with
dynamic auto-leveling that compensates for varying vehicle loads.
To
help ensure maximum driver alertness, G80 also benefits from an
innovative CO2 sensor control system, located under the glove box.
Engineers discovered that occupants start to get drowsy when CO2 levels
reached more than 2,000 parts per million, so the ventilation system
helps ensure the cabin maintains a CO2 concentration well below that
level at all times using freshly-ventilated ambient air. The system
monitors the vehicle's intake of fresh or re-circulated air using a
dedicated CO2 sensor.
The G80 also offers a parking assistance
system with eight ultrasonic sensors located on the front and rear
bumpers. The sensors, along with the rearview camera, help detect how
close objects are when parking. Distance is indicated on the in-dash
screen and is accompanied by an audible warning tone.
The entire
Genesis G80 structure was engineered to meet the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick + standard. The G80 is equipped
with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), energy-absorbing front seats
and nine airbags including advanced dual front airbags, driver's knee
airbag, front and outboard rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and
roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat
occupants. Standard LED Daytime running lights improve vehicle
visibility and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) provides
individual tire pressure readouts.
G80 is brought to a halt by
large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic
Brake Distribution (EBD). The 3.8 models have 13.6-inch front rotors,
while the 5.0 has even larger 14.2-inch front rotors. Both braking
systems use four-piston fixed monobloc calipers for precise braking
responsiveness.
REFINED & QUIET CABIN
In
pursuit of refined quietness within the cabin, special attention was
paid to the increased application of sound-absorbing materials and
additional noise-reduction enhancements. Acoustic laminated glass, a
low-noise fuel pump, improved cowl bulkhead insulation and sealing, and
increased overall bodyshell rigidity to help minimize vibrations all
contribute to G80's quiet interior. Insulation of the rear differential
helps reduce booming and vibration, resulting in lower audible noise
inside the passenger cabin. During acceleration, sound quality has been
achieved through mid- to high-frequency noise reduction, and dynamic
engine sound improvements were achieved through intake and exhaust
system tuning.
DRIVER CONVENIENCE TECHNOLOGIES
The
Genesis G80 provides a high level of premium driver convenience
technologies focused around human-centered innovation. Other competitors
with hands-free trunk-opening technology use a leg-kick sensor under
the rear bumper to enable the driver to open the trunk. Instead, the
G80's hands-free smart trunk system was designed to open the trunk
automatically if the smart key is detected in a pocket or purse within a
few feet of the rear bumper for longer than three seconds. This system
allows the driver to keep both feet comfortably on the ground, while
waiting by the trunk a few seconds for it to open automatically. It also
provides an audible warning and flashing light prior to opening.
Taking
inspiration from aircraft technology, an available Head's-Up Display
(HUD) projects a virtual image onto the windshield, enabling the driver
to keep his or her eyes on the road using a system of mirrors combined
with a TFT LCD display. The system features adjustable brightness to
ensure both excellent daytime and nighttime visibility. Driving
information such as speed, Smart Cruise Control status, navigation,
Blind Spot Detection, Forward Collision Warning, speed limit, Lane
Departure Warning and audio system data is projected at a perceived
virtual distance approximately seven feet ahead of the driver for
maximum legibility while driving.
The G80 also features an
electronic parking brake with Automatic Vehicle Hold for ultimate
convenience when driving in traffic. Automatic Vehicle Hold
automatically holds the G80 at a stop until the accelerator pedal is
depressed, such as at a traffic signal or in stopped traffic. The
vehicle hold re-engages whenever the vehicle is brought to a complete
stop. G80 also includes proximity-key entry convenience with push-button
start as standard equipment.
MEDIA AND NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
For
audiophiles, Genesis G80 offers an ultra-premium, Lexicon® Discrete
Logic 7 Surround audio system with 17 speakers, Logic 7 Surround Sound
processing and 12-channel digital amplifier with 900-watts of equivalent
output, sure to satisfy the most demanding listeners. This system is
paired with a premium DIS navigation system featuring a 9.2-inch High
Definition display, with 720p high definition and a 64GB Solid State
Drive (SSD) for multimedia. It also includes Gracenote® album art,
junction view with lane guidance, advanced voice recognition, and
music/image/video storage via USB download (approximately 30GB of usable
storage).
Additionally, the G80 is available with a 14-speaker
Lexicon system with Discrete Logic 7 Surround processing and a
12-channel DSP amplifier with 900-watts of equivalent output. This
system is accompanied by G80's standard 8-inch touchscreen navigation
packed with integrated technology, including Apple® CarPlay and Android®
Auto with additional hands-free and app-supporting software. The G80's
smartphone integration provides seamless and intuitive operation of the
most commonly used smartphone functions including app-based navigation,
streaming audio, voice-controlled search capabilities, plus any approved
smartphone apps.
The G80 also features standard Bluetooth,
SiriusXM® Radio, HD Radio, and iPod/USB auxiliary media input jacks. The
instrument cluster displays utilize high-resolution, electroluminescent
